霍栀从小在孤儿院长大。在一场车祸中，他救下了江氏地产公司继承人江村。江村一见钟情的爱上了霍栀，在寻找霍栀的过程中，却阴差阳错的娶了双胞胎姐姐秦樱素。霍栀与秦樱素相认后，误以为江家依仗豪门世家，对樱素冷淡对待。她同情樱素在江家“悲惨”的处境，单纯的为了让樱素出去治疗不孕不育，李代桃僵的进入江家。为了不在细节上出纰漏，霍栀伪装发生意外导致失忆。“失忆后”的霍栀流露出天真质朴，善待他人的本性。江村欣喜妻子的变化，对妻子变得照顾体贴。不久，江村发现霍栀顶替秦樱素进入江家的真相，此事顿时在江家掀起风波。江村和樱素的婚姻也走到了尽头。江村樱素提出离婚，但在去办理手续的路上发生了车祸，樱素获救，而江村却意外失踪。几个月后，失忆的江村回到这座城市。在孤儿院里，他和霍栀过往美好的点滴唤醒了他的记忆，但他记得起过往这些美好的回忆，却记不得霍栀本人了。霍栀也有意远离了江村的生活。。MOTHER TONGUE (母语) is a portrait of a Chinese American family in which the consequences of a mother’s decision to leave her young daughter in the care of a white American “homestay” family are slowly unearthed over the course of a family dinner.
