明朝万历三十七年，江南蠹县县城，接连发生凶案，死者身份各异，彼此毫无关联，尸体被布置成离奇的姿势，每个案发现场都留有一句话。作为第一个受害者的徒弟，小捕快曲三更协同小伙伴展开调查，随着调查的深入，三教九流、士农工商各色人等纷纷登场，迷雾重重之中，二十年前的一宗旧案浮上水面。究竟凶手会是何人，又有怎样的目的？。Inspired by W.G. Sebald’s book and based on WWII archive footage, the film puts forward the question: is it morally acceptable to use civilian population as a means of war? Is it possible to justify mass destruction for the sake of higher “moral” ideals?
